Several brain injuries can occur in accidents

Many accidents can lead to brain injuries, and the severity of these varies greatly. Brain injuries don't always involve a hit to the head. Even in a situation where the head is flung about in a violent manner, such as a car crash, damage is possible. Because of this, anyone who is in an accident should have an evaluation for this.

Doctors who are trying to determine what's going on will have several possibilities to consider. This can involve using different types of tests and imaging studies but having a proper diagnosis ensures the patient receives a suitable treatment plan.

A contusion is one possible brain injury. This is a bruise that affects a specific area of the brain. There are two types of contusions – contrecoup or coup. A contrecoup contusion occurs on the opposite side of the brain as an impact. A coup contusion is present at the site of the impact.

A concussion is one of the more common brain injuries people might experience. A single concussion might not have lasting health impacts, but it must be taken seriously.

A hematoma, which is a blood clot, occurs when a blood vessel bursts. This can lead to serious complications, and prompt treatment is necessary.

A traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage occurs when there is bleeding between the brain and the skull. It is the result of the damage to and the tearing of the nerve axons.

A diffuse axonal injury is one that occurs when the brain moves back and forth within the skull. This causes the nerve cells to stretch, which leads to significant damage.

While not all brain injuries are emergencies, getting swift medical care may help improve the overall outcome. If your injury is due to another person's negligence, you might opt to pursue a compensation claim to help defray your out-of-pocket expenses.
