Speeding near schools or highway work zones puts lives at risk. To cut down on dangerous driving, Virginia now allows automated speed cameras in certain areas. These devices track speeds and capture images of vehicles that break the limit, giving officials a new way to enforce traffic laws and protect communities.
Where cameras operate
State law limits these devices to specific zones. Officials place automated speed cameras in school crossing zones, highway work zones, and intersections labeled as high-risk. High-risk intersections include those close to schools, with marked crosswalks, where at least one traffic fatality has happened since 2014. By targeting these areas, the state aims to protect students, pedestrians, and road crews in zones with greater danger.
How officers enforce violations
When a vehicle travels ten or more miles per hour over the posted limit in one of these zones, the system records the violation and triggers a civil penalty of up to $100. Authorities mail the notice to the vehicle’s owner or lessee. That person can file a sworn statement if someone else drove the vehicle. Mailed tickets count only as civil penalties, so they do not appear on a driving record and insurers cannot use them to raise rates. If an officer issues a ticket in person using the same device, that charge goes on the driver’s record.
What drivers should know
State law requires clear signs within 1,000 feet of every zone that uses these cameras. In school zones, officials must also place signs or flashing beacons to show that the crossing is active. The state restricts these devices to speed enforcement and orders removal of any unused data not linked to an official citation.
Automated speed cameras highlight Virginia’s push toward technology-driven traffic enforcement. This approach reflects a larger effort to protect communities where reckless driving creates the greatest risks.
